Activia Yogurt Claims

Activia yogurt is one of the most popular probiotic yogurts today. Although most yogurt contains probiotics, or at least it should, Activia claims to be different than most yogurts.

Now other yogurt companies are coming out with new lines of "probiotic yogurt." activia-yogurt According to certain yogurt companies who manufacture probiotic yogurt, their products contain beneficial bacteria that is more likely to survive digestion and make it to the colon. which if this is true would make their yogurt more effective at aiding in digestion.

Activia has even gone so far as to use trademarked bacteria that can are not available else where. As far as I know Dannon's Activia was the first to do this.

So, is Activia Yogurt worth paying for?

Consumers say yes. Since Dannon introduced Activia Yogurt sales in the U.S. have been above one hundred million. Even while the company was facing a lawsuit, in reguards to the accuracy of their claims, the sale of Activia still soared.

The Food and Drug Administration is trying to take a neutral position and allow manufactures to promote their products, yet still protect consumers from outrageous claims. If companies have scientific evidence to back up their claims then more power to them, but by and large products containing probiotics tend to make outrageous claims.

Activia claims that it can "help regulate your digestive system by helping reduce long intestinal transit time."

Their packaging states, "Activia is scientifically proven to help with slow intestinal transit when eaten every day for two weeks as part of a balanced diet and healthy lifestyle." They can even provide studies to back their claims, as you can see on their website.

Is Activia more effective than regular live culture yogurt?

Activia's trademarked bacteria, Bifidus Regularis, is supposedly not present in other yogurts.

"Specialists at Dannon selected Bifidus Regularis for Activia because it survives passage through the digestive tract, arriving in the colon as a living culture. Once there, it plays a beneficial role in your intestinal ecosystem."

I'm guessing that many ordinary bacteria found in ordinary homemade yogurt can do the same thing a "bifidus regularis." Although they did pick a clever name for their special strand of cultures.

I'm going to start naming the bacteria in my homemade yogurt.

How about...Bifidus Yummiaris or Bifidus Healthiaris Yogurtis.
