Homemade Baby Yogurt

baby-yogurt Making homemade baby yogurt is easy and inexpensive. It is a healthy and nourishing food for babies. Plus they usually love it. The probiotics in the yogurt can help boost baby's immune system, prevent diaper rash and allergies. In fact I've noticed that formula companies have started to add probiotics to infant formula.

In addition to probiotics, yogurt is also a great source of calcium and protein, especially important for a baby's growth and development.

The American Academy of Pediatrics suggests yogurt as a healthy food for babies as early as 8 months old. They also stress the importance of giving babies and toddlers whole milk. Any yogurt given to children up to age 3 should be whole milk yogurt. They need the fat for growth and development.

Yogurt can be given earlier than other dairy products because it's live cultures and enzymes make it much easier to digest. A good quality whole milk yogurt should be the first dairy food given to babies and toddlers.

yobaby-yogurt The baby yogurt recipe below is a whole milk yogurt recipe. It can be made with organic milk if you'd like to give baby organic whole milk yogurt, which is expensive if you buy it at the store (about 4 dollars a pint).

Homemade yogurt is a great food for baby and you can save a lot of money if you make it yourself. Yobaby yogurt is a good quality baby yogurt, if you don't mind spending that much money. This is a nice brand because it contains five strains of live and active cultures and it is low in sugar.

Baby Yogurt Recipe

Ingredients:
  • Pasteurized whole milk (not ultra-pasturized)
  • 1/2 cup Stonyfield Farm organic yogurt (find out why this is my favorite brand to use)

Instructions:

  • Heat the milk on the stovetop over medium heat stirring often until it reaches 180 degrees F.
  • Remove from heat and let cool to 105-110 degrees F
  • Add 1/2 cup Stonyfield yogurt and gently mix into cooled milk
  • Pour into a yogurt maker and let incubate for 6-8 hours
*Remember* Do not sweeten your baby's yogurt with honey. Babies should not be given honey until older. To add some flavoring to your homemade yogurt, try mixing with banana, peaches or strawberries.

I use to mix homemade yogurt in with my little girl's rice cereal. Some people think that whole grains are difficult for babies to digest, so I felt like this might improve her digestion and also help her absorb more nutrients.
