First, here is the basic recipe.
Directions:
Heat one half gallon of milk over medium heat, stirring often.
You are going to heat the milk until right before it starts to boil. It will look frothy and start to steam.
The milk needs to be brought up to 180 degrees Fahrenheit.
The next step is to cool the milk. Let it set until it cools to 110 degrees F.
If you want, you can cool it faster by placing pot in a sink of cold water.
Once the milk is cooled to 110 degrees, you can add the culture.
Add 1/2 cup of plain yogurt, stirring in gently.
A little trick you can use here, is to remove a cup or two of milk and stir into yogurt and then pour the whole thing back in.
Now the milk needs to set and incubate. The cultures will do their job and turn the milk into creamy delicious yogurt in about 6-8 hours.
Either pour yogurt into a yogurt maker container or leave in pot and cover. Then place the entire pot in a gas oven with just the pilot light on.
There are so many ways to flavor homemade yogurt or plain yogurt, but you can also add some ingredients when you add the culture.
Try some of these variations:
Ingredients:
1 quart of whole milk (the best quality you can get)
2 tablespoons sugar or your favorite sweetner (we like to use real maple syrup)
3 teaspoons pure vanilla extract
6 ounces of a good quality plain yogurt or recommended amount of yogurt starter
Directions:
Heat the milk over medium heat for about ten minutes or until it reaches 180 degrees F.
Mix the above three ingredients together after you take the milk off the stove.
Cover and let the milk cool to 110 degrees F.
Once the milk in cooled down add 6 ounces of a good quality plain yogurt. If you have been making homemade yogurt of course you can you that too.
Let it set for 6-8 hours and ferment.

1 quart of whole milk (the best quality you can get)
2 tablespoons sugar or sweetener
3 Chai tea bags (or another flavor)
6 ounces of a good quality plain yogurt or recommended amount of yogurt starter
Directions:
Heat the milk over medium heat for about ten minutes or until it reaches 180 degrees F.
Stir and mix in the sugar.
Let the milk cool to 110 degrees F with the tea bags setting in it.
After about 15-20 minutes, remove the tea bags.
Once the milk is cool enough, add the plain yogurt or starter culture and let the yogurt set undisturbed for 6-8 hours.
You can also save money by using your own flavoring store-bought plain yogurt.
Here are some ideas:
Natural fruit preserves, lemon curd, agave nectar, real maple syrup, raw honey, citrus zest, homemade granola or just fresh fruit.
