Homemade Yogurt as a Staple Food

Did you know that homemade yogurt costs a fraction of the cost of store-bought yogurt? The average American household consumes about five pounds of commercial yogurt per person each year.

Europeans eat at least twice that amount. In Asian countries yogurt and other fermented foods are treasured for their healing properties. Yogurt is popular around the world and with good reason.

When I first got inspired to make my own yogurt I only pictured myself enjoying a quick snack. I didn't realize that it would completely change the way I eat, feed my kids and the way I cook. There is nothing wrong with just making yogurt so that you can enjoy the best snack in the world...yummmmmm homemade yogurt and granola.

It's just that I had no idea that there were so many other ways to enjoy yogurt. I didn't even think about all the ways I could substitute plain yogurt in recipes.

I didn't know about baking with yogurt or using it to make soups, dips and sauces.

One day I came across a recipe for salad dressing that called for some yogurt. Boy, once I started making my own salad dressing and realized how much better it is than store bought. Just doing that one thing alone; eating a lot of salad with your own healthy dressing can really make a big impact on your health. You can check out my homemade salad dressing recipes here.

When I started making yogurt in my crockpot, I started making it by the gallon. Once I had a gallon of yogurt sitting in my fridge at all times, I had to use it up.

I'd use it as a substitution of for many common products like: sour cream cream cheese mayonnaise butter

There are all kinds of healthy snacks for kids that can be made with homemade yogurt, like smoothies, yogurt pops, fruit and veggie dips and frozen yogurt.

Homemade Yogurt Savings

If you enjoy the satisfaction of making something from scratch, you will love this!
Do you want to see how much money you could save on you grocery bill by making your own yogurt ?

The whey that is strained off the yogurt to make yogurt cheese has many uses too.

I use whey for soaking grains, making pizza and bread dough, making cultured vegetables and whey lemonade. Even if I didn't want to make something with it I probably wouldn't dump it down the drain. It can be used to water plants or the compost pile.

When a gallon of homemade yogurt only costs you $2-$5 dollars (the cost of milk) you may also want to use it for homemade dog treats or homemade beauty products. Check out my homemade face mask recipes for some yogurt facial recipes that will make your skin feel great.
