Make Organic Yogurt

Need a good reason to make organic yogurt or at least buy a good organic brand of yogurt?

Recently, I discovered that some of the most popular yogurt brands use milk from cows treated rBGH (recombinant bovine growth hormone). You can see an article about it for yourself.

Read the article here.

Isn't that terrible?

Both Dannon and Yoplait announced recently that they will stop using milk from cows injected with a growth hormone in its yogurts by the end of 2009. Meanwhile, I guess that stuff is in their yogurt, not to mention other brands. Hopefully other yogurt brands will follow suit.

When I buy milk I buy organic milk or check to see that the milk I am buying says that it does not contain rBGH. I never thought about the yogurt I was eating. Fortunately I eat homemade yogurt most of the time.

I wouldn't wait until the end of 2009 to get yogurt without antibiotics and growth hormones. Below you can see how easy it is to make homemade yogurt.

If you are looking to buy a good yogurt from the store I highly recommend Stonyfield Organic Yogurt --that's my favorite. You'll hear me recommend it again and again. It is also the best yogurt to use as a starter to make homemade yogurt because it has 6 strains of live and active cultures.

Here is the recipe I use to make homemade organic yogurt.

I use organic whole milk you can use a low fat or 2% or whatever, but the less fat in your milk the thinner the yogurt will be. I prefer the thickness of whole milk yogurt, but if you want to use a low fat milk you can strain the finished yogurt to achieve a thicker yogurt.

Organic Yogurt Recipe

You'll need:
  • 1/2 Cup Stonyfield Organic Whole Milk Yogurt
  • Half a gallon organic whole milk (or other organic milk)
  • A yogurt making thermometer (candy making thermometer works fine)

  • Heat milk to 180 degrees F on the stove top stirring often
  • Cool to 105-110 degrees F (usually takes about 1 hour)
  • Add 1/2 cup Stonyfield yogurt
  • Mix in gently
  • Let set to incubate for 6-8 hours by pouring into a yogurt maker

There are several methods of making yogurt if you do not have a yogurt maker. Find one the works best for you here.
