Types of Probiotics and Probiotic Food

With so many different types of probiotics available today, it can be a bit overwhelming. We know that probiotics are healthy, but what exactly are they?

The word "Probiotic" simply means "for life" which explains why these nutrients are so important. According to the World Health Organization, probiotics are "Live microorganisms which when administered in adequate amounts confer a health benefit on the host."

There are many traditional foods that contain probiotics like sauerkraut, buttermilk and yogurt.

Lately, we see a lot of fortified foods like cereal and breakfast bars that contain probiotics. Kashi Vive Probiotic Digestive Wellness Cereal is one such product.

However the most common type of probiotics are supplements. These probiotics supplements can be found in many forms.

  • Liquid
  • Capsule
  • Chewable tablets

Not all probiotics are created equal. Each specific strain of bacteria present in a food or supplement has a different purpose in the human body.

Strains of Bifidobacterium and Lactobacillus bacteria are the most common types of probiotics and are used frequently in the manufacture of dairy and yogurt products.

Lactobacillus and bifidobacterium bacteria are believed to assist in maintaining the balance of beneficial bacteria which naturally exist your digestive system. Some other common types of probiotics are Lactobacillus, Bifidobacterium, Saccharomyces and Streptococcus.

Foods containing probiotics can be added into the diet to benefit overall health with little risk of side effects, but probiotic supplements should not be used to treat an illness or disease without first consulting a physician, especially if you have a compromised immune system.
